In The View from Mays and Main: Downtown Round Rock\, from Sam Bass to the Early Days of the Automobile\, Mayfield recounts his great-grandmother’s eyewitness account of the Sam Bass gunfight\, his father’s memories of Round Rock in the 1930s and 1940s\, and the history of his grandfather’s service station—now being restored as part of Water Tower Park. Mark Mayfield is a retired U.S. Department of State official and a seventh-generation Texan who now lives in Temple.
