SUMMARY:The Salon at Wildfire
DESCRIPTION:SCOUNDRELS!\nIn its early years\, Georgetown’s growth and behavior was largely steered by a strong Methodist population.  They built Southwestern University but also fought diligently against drinking\, gambling\, and other forms of what some called vice and others called entertainment.  Still\, Georgetown was a part of the early fabric of Texas\, and scoundrels were aplenty.  Join us at the Salon as we explore their cheating\, lying\, burning\, and stealing misdeeds during the first half-century of this young town on the San Gabriel River. \n\nMeet the Salon Speaker: Liz Weaver\nA retired insurance executive and teacher\, I’ve been the historian for Preservation Georgetown since 2017.  My husband Ron and I moved to Georgetown in 2001 with our two girls and have loved the 23 years we’ve been here.  In 2014\, we got the opportunity to purchase an historic home in Old Town and embarked upon a long renovation.  We now share it with two cats who grudgingly allow us to welcome our daughters\, grandchildren\, and friends.\n\nI’ve always been fascinated with the stories of the people who came before us.  As a child\, I grew up in Louisiana and spent a lot of time with an uncle whose father was the first treasurer of Bee County.  His stories about “the old country” were a constant in my childhood and were the stuff of dreams.  My parents were both avid genealogists\, and I inherited that love of research.  Over the years\, my focus has shifted from my family’s genealogy to what is essentially Georgetown’s\, documenting its structures and the people who lived here before us.

DESCRIPTION:Fire of Love documentary screening \n  \nJoin us at the museum on February 14th for a special Valentine’s Day Salon: A screening of the Oscar-nominated\, National Geographic documentary film Fire of Love.  \n  \n \n  \n“Katia and Maurice Krafft loved two things — each other and volcanoes. For two decades\, the daring French volcanologist couple roamed the planet\, chasing eruptions and documenting their discoveries. Ultimately\, they lost their lives in a 1991 volcanic explosion\, leaving a legacy that forever enriched our knowledge of the natural world. Director Sara Dosa and the filmmaking team fashion a lyrical celebration of the intrepid scientists’ spirit of adventure\, drawing from the Kraffts’ spectacular archive. FIRE OF LOVE tells a story of primordial creation and destruction\, following two bold explorers as they venture into the unknown\, all for the sake of love.” \n– film description from National Geographic website \n  \n  \n6:30 PM at The Williamson Museum\, 716 South Austin Avenue Georgetown TX 78626 \nThe Salon is a free event. She tagged along with family as they interviewed people\nwhose memories stretched back to the cattle drive era. She was also included on trips to archeological\ndigs exploring the ancient history of Central Texas. This led to a deep understanding of local history and\na passion for sharing it with others.\nKat brings along decades of non-profit leadership roles and has served on numerous non-profit boards\nand executive boards. She has also served on various City of Leander’s commissions and boards for over\n20 years. Kat can often be found making presentations\nabout local and state history. \nI absolutely love Leander and its rich history. I have a passion to make sure every new person that moves\nto Leander has the opportunity to get to know this history too. – Kat Howell \n
