The Salon at Wildfire

May 8 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

SCOUNDRELS!

In its early years, Georgetown’s growth and behavior was largely steered by a strong Methodist population.  They built Southwestern University but also fought diligently against drinking, gambling, and other forms of what some called vice and others called entertainment.  Still, Georgetown was a part of the early fabric of Texas, and scoundrels were aplenty.  Join us at the Salon as we explore their cheating, lying, burning, and stealing misdeeds during the first half-century of this young town on the San Gabriel River.

Meet the Salon Speaker: Liz Weaver

A retired insurance executive and teacher, I’ve been the historian for Preservation Georgetown since 2017.  My husband Ron and I moved to Georgetown in 2001 with our two girls and have loved the 23 years we’ve been here.  In 2014, we got the opportunity to purchase an historic home in Old Town and embarked upon a long renovation.  We now share it with two cats who grudgingly allow us to welcome our daughters, grandchildren, and friends.
I’ve always been fascinated with the stories of the people who came before us.  As a child, I grew up in Louisiana and spent a lot of time with an uncle whose father was the first treasurer of Bee County.  His stories about “the old country” were a constant in my childhood and were the stuff of dreams.  My parents were both avid genealogists, and I inherited that love of research.  Over the years, my focus has shifted from my family’s genealogy to what is essentially Georgetown’s, documenting its structures and the people who lived here before us.
